佛朗梭瓦是一个平凡的年轻人，他在叔父的木材场工作，他有一个幸福的家，每个星期天这都带着妻儿郊游。在春天要转为夏天的时候，他出去办事，遇到在邮税局上班的伊美利，二人随即相爱，佛朗梭瓦并不内疚，继续在两个女人间周旋。他觉得非常幸福，直到有一天他得意忘形的把这件事告诉他的妻子，他的妻子只说了一句话“假如你这样做觉得幸福的话就好”，随即便躺在他身上午睡了。当他醒来时，妻子已经溺水身亡。是意外还是自杀，谁也搞不清。后来伊美利也和佛朗梭瓦一家人去郊游，虽然同以前和他妻子一同郊游一样，但他失去了往日的天真、开朗。这时森林的秋意已经很深了。
